Three Decades of Leadership Excellence
During his extensive career with MGM Resorts, Sanders has held multiple senior positions that shaped the company’s growth trajectory. Before his appointment as COO in 2010, Sanders served as the company’s Chief Financial Officer and treasurer, demonstrating his financial acumen across various market conditions.
His operational expertise extended beyond corporate finance. Sanders worked as COO for MGM’s core brands and served as executive vice-president of operations for the MGM Mirage venue before its sale to Hard Rock International in 2021. His leadership also encompassed roles as executive vice-president and CFO for MGM Grand Resorts, along with several senior positions at the MGM Grand property, including assistant vice-president of corporate finance and tax director.
CEO Hornbuckle’s Tribute
Speaking about Sanders’ departure, CEO Bill Hornbuckle emphasized the executive’s invaluable contributions to the company’s development:
“It’s impossible to overstate what Corey has meant to this company over the last 30-plus years. He has been a constant presence, providing foundational leadership for all the key moments that have defined our history ā from our acquisitions of Mirage Group and Mandalay Resort Group to our regional property openings and expansions like Springfield, National Harbor, Empire City and Borgata. More importantly, Corey helped us put all the different pieces together to create one company and one culture. As a leader and as a person, Corey understood the importance of caring for employees and treating people with respect. He will be deeply missed.”
Succession Planning Underway
MGM Resorts has confirmed that the search for Sanders’ replacement is already in progress, with an announcement expected by the end of this month. This proactive approach reflects the company’s commitment to maintaining operational continuity during leadership transitions.
The timing of Sanders’ retirement comes several months after CEO Hornbuckle secured his own future with the company. In May, Hornbuckle signed a new three-year contract extending through December 2028, with MGM Resorts also offering him an advisory agreement to assist with the company’s integrated resort project in Osaka, Japan.
Industry Impact
Sanders’ retirement represents a significant shift for MGM Resorts International, as his three-decade tenure spans multiple transformative periods in the gaming industry. His leadership through major acquisitions, regional expansions, and cultural integration efforts has positioned MGM Resorts as a dominant force in the global gaming and hospitality sector.
The extended transition period until late 2026 provides MGM Resorts with valuable time to ensure knowledge transfer and maintain the operational excellence that Sanders has helped establish throughout his career.
