Entain launched Seven in the UK on 11 August, a free-to-play football app that rewards players for picking which footballers score the first or last goal in their matches. The app targets fans aged 25 to 35 and is built to move them toward Ladbrokes, Entain’s flagship UK brand.
Players choose seven footballers each game week, three forwards and four from other positions. Three or more correct picks win prizes, and a £100,000 jackpot is available every week. Leagues and social features are due in October.
Seven takes no stakes, which means it reaches people who have not opened a betting account. That is the commercial logic: the app is an acquisition channel for a UK business that runs Ladbrokes, Coral and the rest of Entain’s brand portfolio, and it goes after a demographic the operator says existing football games have not served.
Built inside Angstrom
Seven was developed by Angstrom, the sports modelling, forecasting and data analytics business Entain bought in 2023 for £81m up front plus contingent payments of up to £122m over three years. Angstrom was acquired to bring pricing and risk capability in-house, primarily for US sports betting. Seven puts the same modelling work behind a consumer app.
Ross Jarvis, director of strategy at Angstrom, said the team was looking for a format that sat between fantasy football and quick prediction games.
“What’s that middle line between needing a second full-time job to play and do well at Fantasy Premier League, and games that are just two minutes of wasted time? We wanted to find that five to 10 minute game in the middle, one that taps into the weekend rituals football fans already have.”
Jarvis said competing products had not been given room to develop.
“A lot of the games out there were either redos of games which already existed, or they were baked into one of the gambling operators themselves, which puts guardrails around how much real innovation you can have.”
Goalscorer betting after the World Cup
The launch follows the 2026 FIFA World Cup, during which anytime goalscorer betting across Entain’s brands more than quadrupled. Entain links that to growing interest in individual players, and Seven runs on the same behaviour: every prize in the game depends on which player scores, not which team wins.
Jarvis said the format was designed for people who follow matches in clips rather than in full.
“Even if you join the game at 75 minutes and you’ve got a player in that match, you’ve still got about 15 minutes where, if that player scores the last goal, that’s all that matters to you.”
Bejay Patel, UK managing director at Entain, presented the launch as evidence of how quickly the group can build.
“Seven is a great example of how Entain can innovate at pace. By empowering a dedicated team to think differently and move quickly, we have built a genuinely distinctive product that broadens our portfolio.”
Premier League first, other sports later
Seven starts around the Premier League, a competition where Entain has also been active off the pitch, pressing six clubs in May over unlicensed betting sponsors. Jarvis said the mechanic was built to travel to other leagues and sports, including the US.
“If you think about a sport like NFL, it’s perfectly suited to this mechanic. We’re averaging about 2.8 goals a game in the Premier League, but when you transport that onto NFL, potentially it’s even more exciting, with an average of about 5.56 touchdowns a game.”
What Seven has to prove
The economics of a free-to-play app depend on conversion, not downloads. Entain has not disclosed how many Seven users it expects to register with Ladbrokes, what the jackpot and prize pool cost per game week, or how the app will handle age verification and responsible gambling messaging for users who never place a bet.
Those numbers matter against a UK business that is already Entain’s strongest online market, with UK and Ireland online net gaming revenue up 13% in Q1 2026 while group online NGR rose 5%. Adding a free product to a market that is growing is a different exercise to using one to fix a market that is not.
The first read on whether the format works comes in October, when leagues and social features arrive and Entain finds out how many of the players it recruited in August are still picking squads.
