Diverging Retail Strategies
Flutter Entertainment’s decision to close nearly 60 Paddy Power locations in Ireland has left hundreds of retail staff seeking new employment. Boyle Sports has responded by guaranteeing interview opportunities for all affected workers across its 390-shop network spanning the UK and Ireland.
The company has identified immediate vacancies in shop management, customer service, and operations, with positions available across multiple regions. The recruitment drive forms part of Boyle Sports’ broader £100 million ($132 million) investment in physical retail infrastructure.
Jenna Boyle, Retail Director at Boyle Sports, said: “Sports was built on the high street and we’re proud to still be growing when others are scaling back as we know just how important the in-person experience still is to our customers.”
Economic Pressures on Betting Shops
The wave of closures reflects mounting financial pressure on traditional betting retail operations. Rising property costs, utility expenses, and potential tax increases outlined in the upcoming Autumn Budget have forced operators to reassess their physical presence.
Betfred’s Fred Done has publicly stated that proposed tax hikes could force the closure of all the company’s high street locations, illustrating the sector-wide concern about future viability of retail betting operations.
Paddy Power’s parent company Flutter Entertainment has prioritized digital growth in recent years, with the retail closures representing a strategic shift away from physical infrastructure in certain markets.
Boyle Sports’ High Street Commitment
Despite sector headwinds, Boyle Sports maintains its dual-channel approach, balancing digital operations with significant investment in physical locations. The operator currently serves as front-of-shirt sponsor for Premier League club West Ham United, demonstrating its broader UK market commitment.
“Our commitment to the UK and Ireland is long-term, and we’ll continue building a business that supports local people, local communities and the industry as a whole,” Boyle added.
Boyle Sports CEO Vlad Kaltenieks is scheduled to discuss the company’s retail strategy in Global Gaming Insider’s January CEO Special magazine, addressing how the operator balances land-based gambling with digital expansion.
