The Betfred annual report shows turnover of £995.6m and profit after tax of £39.6m for the 52 weeks to 29 March 2026, according to accounts filed at Companies House. The UK bookmaker had 1,293 shops at the period end, down from 1,351, and has announced 132 further closures that put about 600 jobs at risk.
Betfred annual report figures
Gross profit for the period was £720m, according to Betfred’s Companies House filing history. Online turnover was about £452m, which leaves roughly £544m for the retail estate.
The previous reporting period covered 78 weeks to 30 March 2025, so the two sets of accounts are not directly comparable. Betfred also invested £110.4m in development costs for its online platform during the year.
Shop closures
The shop estate shrank by 58 outlets over the year, from 1,351 to 1,293. The 132 closures announced since the year end would take the estate below 1,200 once completed. Average headcount fell from 9,622 to 9,463.
TGE has tracked the wider wave of iGaming layoffs in 2026.
Tax context
Remote Gaming Duty rises from 21% to 40% for accounting periods beginning on or after 1 April 2026, according to the UK government’s gambling duty changes. Betfred’s reporting period ended on 29 March 2026, so the higher rate falls outside the accounts.
A new 25% General Betting Duty rate applies to remote general bets from 1 April 2027, the same government page states. Bets placed on self-service betting terminals in licensed premises stay at 15%. More coverage sits under TGE’s gambling tax tag.
Next steps
The 132 shop closures are pending, and the General Betting Duty change takes effect on 1 April 2027.
