Citadel Securities has invested $400 million in Crypto.com, valuing the cryptocurrency exchange at approximately $20 billion and handing the platform its first outside institutional investor since it launched in 2016.
The Singapore-based exchange announced the deal on July 16, describing it as the first institutional funding round in its decade-long history. Both companies said the capital will go toward Crypto.com’s expansion into tokenized securities and derivatives, two segments they framed as the next stage of growth for digital assets.
What the money is for
Crypto.com said the fresh capital will fund a broader push across asset classes, with tokenized securities and derivatives at the centre of the plan. The exchange wants to move further into products that connect digital-asset trading with traditional financial markets, building toward what it described as a round-the-clock trading infrastructure.
Citadel Securities, the US market maker founded by Ken Griffin, provides liquidity and trade execution across global markets. The investment gives it a direct equity position in one of the largest retail crypto platforms rather than the trading-side role it usually holds.
“We are thrilled to work with Citadel Securities to continue driving the crypto industry into a new era of institutionalization,” said Kris Marszalek, co-founder and chief executive of Crypto.com.
“The size of the opportunity in front of us is staggering, as crypto increasingly becomes the rails for finance. Having built the right regulatory and tech infrastructure over the last decade, Crypto.com is now perfectly positioned to capture this new wave of growth across all asset classes.”
A decade without outside capital
Crypto.com has grown into one of the world’s largest cryptocurrency platforms, serving millions of users across more than 90 countries. It did so without raising much external money, relying instead on organic growth and early fundraising. That included a $13 million seed round and a 2017 initial coin offering that generated roughly $26.7 million.
The absence of institutional backers made the exchange unusual among its peers, many of which raised large venture rounds during the last crypto cycle. The Citadel Securities deal changes that position and gives Crypto.com an established Wall Street name on its cap table.
Citadel’s widening crypto footprint
For Citadel Securities the deal extends a run of digital-asset bets. The firm took part in Kraken’s roughly $200 million raise, which valued that exchange at about $20 billion, and in Ripple’s $500 million round. It has also backed infrastructure providers working on tokenization, signalling a move from pure liquidity provision toward strategic stakes in the platforms that could carry regulated crypto products.
Prediction markets and the valuation race
Crypto.com has recently pushed into prediction markets through partnerships with High Roller Technologies and FanDuel Predicts, and through its own platform, OG.com. The vertical has drawn heavy interest from both crypto firms and traditional betting operators over the past year.
At a $20 billion valuation, the exchange now sits among the most valuable companies operating across prediction and digital-asset markets, in the same range as Kalshi and Polymarket. Whether the Citadel Securities capital lets Crypto.com convert that valuation into a durable position in tokenized securities and derivatives, or whether regulators slow the expansion, will shape how far the deal carries.
